We have that picture in our Headquarters, that pic, and a lot that you see like that, were taken in this area of Tulare County. It is a Giant Sequoia.
Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest is home to 6 of the top 15 largest trees on the planet. We regularly patrol the forest on weekends during the summer to protect the state forest from fire, even though fire is the Sequoia's favorite friend. Recently, about four miles from my fire station, one of the largest trees in the Trail of 100 Giants fell. It took us almost four weeks to help the Forest Service to clean up the mess it made
Pretty impressive creatures in person. And to see one, and know that in that picture it was all cut by hand and misery whip saws is even more impressive.
