Help. How difficult is a rear rebuild?

I am considering upgrading rear gears to 489. i have some mechanical abiltiy. are there any special tools? I can only afford to do this once.Im torn on whether to have purchase them done or do the job myself.
where is a good place to purchase all the parts, bearings, gears, the whole deal?
Anyone with a blog?
