While in the process of overhauling the diffs from the 3 axles I started into the front rear axles centre section. I got the carrier off and inspected it and found it to be in great shape. The carrier bearings were newer and looked great and the gears where really nice. Pinion bearings were also surprising in great shape. I drilled out the cap dowels so that I could rebuild the spider gears. When I got the last pin removed from the cap I found I could turn it by hand to remove. The cap unscrewed easily and the main body looks really clean at the joint area. Has anyone seen this or used another cap to reinstall and torque down into place properly?. I know the book shows the carrier as an assembly but I took a few quick measurements and it looks like it might work. I do have extra carrier assemblies but thought i might give it a shot to try and repair it. What do you think? waste of time and effort or what. I planned on assembling the carrier and then putting it on vee blocks to check for runout on the bearing surfaces and ring gear mounting face. Does anyone know how these parts were machined from the factory originally ie as an assembled unit or individual parts and then checked later. I also have found that on the front diffs pinion duplex bearing it had lost it's preload. I checked into it and took it to work and surface ground the cone faces the amount I measured and retried. The bearing was again tight and smooth with 0.002" preload on it instead of the 0.007"end float it had. This unit is slated for the front diff and will see only limited use anyways so I'll check into to see how it lasts. I found that this bearing is also around the $300 mark nowadays and getting harder to find . All the bearings set uo nice with good torques so hopefully it's good for another 70 years or so.
