Based on experience it could be several things. 1. Not a good ground 2. Bad or dirty switch and or the rotating contacts on both ends that are dirty, worn, or pitted and can't carry the amps needed to light up the bulb. Have you checked the voltage at the bulb while the light is hooked up? Good possibility that the volts drop off when the load is applied.
