I have not torn into the starter yet. It may just need a new switch and a good cleaning as you say. I plan to clean it and will go from there. I have a volt-ohmeter, but not much else to test with. No dial indicator or V-blocks to check run-out of the comutator, etc.

The one generator I "rebuilt" in the past needed a good cleaning and new brushes. I undercut the mica with a small hack saw blade. Worked OK I guess. I would like to refresh several generators for current trucks and upcoming projects.

I recently got a truck that was converted to 12 volt but no alternator was installed. The generator won't charge the battery. I need to check and see if it is a 12-volt generator. I think the regulator points are burnt also. My biggest weakness on these old trucks (new ones for that matter) is how to troubleshoot auto electrics. I'd like to learn how to do it right.
