I still stand by my thread pitch theory.
However I need to elaborate a little.
At least it's my theory, and I'm certainly no engineer,just self taught.
Pretty sure it has to do with the outside diameter of the nut(hex size across the flats)
To keep the nut hex at 5/8 with a 7/16 dia/thread pitch, there's nut enough wall thickness for proper strength, so the size is increased to 11/16's.
Also fyi the 9/16 bolt and nut are two different hex size's.
The other size bolts mentioned are ok because the bolt diameter/hex size fall within acceptable spec.'s.

Agreed back it the day the different wrench sizes were to accommodate wrench's.
Then it was standardized.
