There aren't many left any more. I have two neighbors left who served in the war, one in the Navy and one in the Army. I think one's over 90 and the other's close. The Navy man got a new dog last year who's still kind of bouncy and friendly. Nice dog, but he does run up to people and sometimes jump on them to be petted. One of the county deputies was over talking to this man a little while ago because somebody had complained about his dog running loose. The dog came up to the cop and jumped on him, didn't even bite him, and the cop wrote this WWII veteran a $500 citation for "vicious dog at large". He went to court and told the judge that his dog was a nice dog, wasn't vicious, etc, but of course the judge didn't know the dog and just had the deputy's word on it. They told him he could either pay the fine or give up the dog. He told the judge he didn't want to lose his dog, so he figured he'd better pay the fine.

Never once did he think of mentioning to the judge who was probably 40 years his junior or the deputy, who was probably at least 60 years younger, anything about his service to their country or how in his day they had a lot worse problems than rambunctious dogs jumping on people.

That's how those guys are. They did their job, came home, had a family and a business, and never expected any kind of special honor or treatment for what they went through. I'd sure like to know who that young deputy was that would fine a 90 year old veteran $500 because his dog jumped on him, though. He couldn't remember the guy's name, unfortunately. Or maybe he really could remember but he didn't want me saying anything to the guy.
