Actually, the FS doesn't like converted military trucks any more. You have to be approved and signed up before the fire season starts and as I understand it, they put the contract rigs in various classifications depending on how desirable they are. They call the best rigs first. The trucks have to go through a test to be approved. Part of the test is something like driving a certain distance at 60 mph (rules out the WC right there) and then afterward the inspector goes underneath to see if there's any oil leak. It can't drip more than one drop of oil in some certain amount of time. This is for environmental reasons, of course, so the fire trucks don't damage the environment while putting out the fire. I'm pretty sure NDT tires aren't allowed either.

The long and sort of it is an old military brush rig these days is okay for personal use or on a job site where you have to have water available, but it's not going to get any FS contract work unless the whole country's on fire.
