we used to call the old ford 292's and 312's y-blocks because of the design of the block, (crank in the block) very strong and ridgid design, i.e. 440,426h, 426w, ect. big block ford the same, if you look at one of these engines from the front or back it's a Y shape. it's actually a design and not an engine name. Dave.
