Is somebody who knows both of you gets a virus on his computer. The virus looks in the victim's address book and sends out spam to random people in it, and spoofs the return address using the name of other people in the address book. Thus the "from" field doesn't mean much. There's no more control over the truth of an email return address as there is over the return address on an envelope. That also means it doesn't usually do any good to complain to whoever's in the "from" field.
