I think this is the HVAC stuff you were looking for. The HD guy must not know what they sell. It's in the electrical department. It's just a block of sticky-pucky that you cut, roll, or whatever to fill gaps and stop rattles. It's not expensive -- $2 for a chunk abut the size of 2 cigarette packs.
The RV stuff I'm thinking of is more of a very thick adhesive tape. It's a whole different product -- designed to tape up the outside seams on the top of an RV, which anyone who's had an RV knows always leak eventually. I can't remember what it's called, but I've even seen it at Wal*Mart.
