Yeah, coal in a wood stove is a bad idea. There's a reason they use coal to smelt iron. A proper coal stove has a cast iron fire pot and a cast iron grate that slopes towards the middle. Cast iron can take more heat than rolled steel, and the air going up through the grate prevents it from overheating, plus the shape of the grate keeps the hot coal from being right up against the sides of the stove. Most of the old "wood" kitchen stoves were made to burn coal or wood, but a regular "wood stove" will get burned out in short order with coal.
