I've been in total wood heated homes now for over 35 years. I put in an outdoor wood boiler over 8 years ago and love it. I can load it up once a day and it heats a 36' X 50' two story house with full basement and 36' X 50' attached garage. I heat my hot water for the house with it too.

It is work as far as the firewood goes But I actually enjoy getting out to do it. Wood boilers use more wood than a high efficiency stove does but the convienence is worth it to me. No dirt or smoke in the house and once a day feeding.

I built a building for mine so the years wood AND me stays dry.

It took 4 years to pay for itself and that was based on JUST heating the house, not the garage and hot water savings.

All the contractors I've talked to say if not wood, geothermal or NG.
