I built a boat motor a few years ago, and used the steel plugs that came from the machine shop. One lasted 80 miles, had to return to the dock and change it to brass. Next one went 1/2 mile further. I changed to the 20 minute old spare on the water. Changed the rest before the next trip out, They lasted years. Salt water cooled 225 Jeep V6.

One thing our L-heads lack is sacrificial zinc water outlets and water pump housings though. And we don't have excess heater pipe holes to screw in the zinc plugs sold at marine stores. Maybe a cut-in-block-heater in the upper hose type fitting made of zinc?

Or is it all moot if we use modern anti-freeze?
