Every year they have a bit "ATV Rendezvous" in Wallace. Hundreds of ATVers come to town and one of their most popular rides is a one-day loop that takes them through my place about 10 miles outside of town. I recently found out that some of them have been complaining publicly about the ugliness of the "old machinery" I have on my place. I guess when they drive in from California or Seattle in their $50,000 pickup with $20-$30,000 worth of ATVs in a nice enclosed trailer, they expect to be able to ride through a pristine wilderness and not have to look at a bunch of old trucks.

For the most part, they're harmless folks. Most of them are older and they putt-putt along the road across the hillside like tin ducks on a chain in a shooting gallery. Now and then some of them ride right down my driveway to my place, see me, and spin around to get out of there without saying hi, which I don't like so I take the short-cut trail up through the woods cut them off, and let them think about "Deliverance" for a while. The ones that talk to me are usually fine, but half the time the ones who don't are so sh*t-faced drunk that they can barely talk even if I corner them. And of course I have to pick up their empties.

But I know it's money into the local economy, and the hotels and bars in town do pretty well off of them for a week. What frosts me is that I'm nice enough to let them ride through my property, and then thy go and complain about my ugly trucks. I could do like Gov Schweitzer of Montana did a couple years ago, right across the hill, and put a gate across a road that everybody used to think was public, but I'd be a real schmuck to do that.

But where do they get off coming in here from the big city with all their money and fancy rigs, and then driving across somebody else's property and complaining that his place is ugly? I'd like to see what they'd think of me driving across their yard back in the suburbs and telling them their place is ugly. Besides, my trucks aren't ugly. They're all Dodges, or military, or both.
