Depends on what seal he used and how it was installed. The two-piece can go in easily if you loosen the crank, than assist the install by pushing on the seal while turning the crank manually at the same time. If things aren't lined up right, the seal will be destroyed in the process. (that's why I always get two of them before starting) If the "H" seals are missing, then like Kaegi said, there are alot of other possibilities. Let us know how it works out.....
