I think you basically solve the problem by splining the axle at the diff. even so as I remember there is about an eighth of an in. or so clearance around the axle at the spindle, might be enuff.

and you could always make the shaft thicker fine spline at the diff and still clear the spindle and the xtra girth of the replacement axle may lend plus better metal may lend sufficient strength to a course spline so you can use the factory cups
