Really un-necessary. On days with even a thin layer (~1/2" or more) of snow and/or a bit of ice, I'm able to EASILY make a full lock U-turn in front of my office in 4WD in my M37 without any difficulties. Though I usually do it in 2WD to take advantage of throttle oversteer (kicking the rear end around with the pedal) unless it's very slippery. I also drive to work on a divided highway, the Seward Highway, sometimes in 4WD up to about 55 mph with rear and front Lockrights.
They're just not "bad" like so many think. Like I've said before, there's a slight pull to the left with throttle, and therefore a slight lurch to the right when letting off, due to compensating steering. But I've unconsciously adjusted now. It's not a vehicle for a novice driver, though, with a very wide ratio 5 speed, dual autolockers, 37" tires and 6500 lb with non power assisted brakes.
