When using 8 volt batteries in six volt systems remember the following things: 1. Lead-Acid batteries at full charge are approximately 2.3 volts per cell. Thus a 6 volt battery at full charge would be 6.9 volts, and an 8 volt battery would be 9.2 volts.
2. The life of lamps (light bulbs) decreases in an exponentially with the increase in voltage.
3. Electric motors and coils run hotter with increased voltage and insulation breakdown occurs sooner.
4. Since the starter is a series motor it is the most tolerant of increased voltage and the most durable part of the electrical system.
5. A six volt stock generator may not be able to properly charge an 8 volt battery as it would have to put out almost 10 volts.
