Chris, from the wording of your post, I'm assuming your located west of the Cascades and will be using one of the passes. There are some fairly long grades that you'll be going down both ways. Your half ton may be OK to pull, but how long til your brakes burn out dropping off of Mt Hood into Portland with almost 3 tons pushing you? The other passes are worse, with more curves. Myself, if I didn't have a trailor with brakes, I'd drive the PW. I used to drive over "Hood" in my '57 Cornbinder (IHC) a dozen or so times a year in the 70's. 35mph up oneside 55mph down the other. They made those slow vehicle turn outs for guys like us. Remember it's not the destination, it's the ride along the way. Be safe, enjoy the ride, and get out of the way!
