Hold on a minute!! First question I've got is: "Was it making the noise with the driveline connected?"
If you are running the engine with the trans. as the only load (no load), there is nothing to stop the internals of the trans. from spinning when you shift back to 'park'. The parking paul is trying to engauge, but can't untill things stop spinning ( hence the grinding noise ).
