I have both 4.89's and 5.83's in my Dodges. My 52 PW is stock and does OK except on a few hills around here. Would I change it to 4.89? No the 230 does not have sufficient power. If I worked the engine to get more power it would just make up for the slowness on the hills. It is a great work truck.

The other Dodge is a WC 53 Carry All. I have rebuilt it totally. I have 4.89's with a locker in the rear. It has a Chev 327 V8 with 300+ HP. It does just fine with the 4.89's. Top speed is unknown at this time but is 80MPH + (I did it) The truck is fine and very stable at that speed. The major problem is the brakes. I have have a twin reservoir master cylinder that is boosted with original drums and it stops the truck quickly until the heat causes brake fading. I am currently putting on a set of Helitool disk brakes. It will be interesting to see how they do in a boosted system.
