engine interchange

I have a 91 Dodge Ram 150 with a 5.2 litre engine that needs rebuilding. I cannot tie this vehicle up using the engine that is in it, but have access to some older 318's. I cannot get any definitive information from the salvage yards or a Dodge dealer as to how far back the longblocks are compatible. Can anyone tell me where I can find this info out or does someone already know??
