I have honed some out with good result. It just takes some perseverence to get the pits out. I had a friend who was rebuilding a 47 2wd Dodge pickup. He called one day wanting to bring his cylinders over and use my hone. He arrived, we clamped one in the vise and I set him up with the hone and showed him how to do it. He started and I was walking back to what I was doing, and he says, "that should be enough. Maybe 30 seconds! I said no way, keep on honing! Another 30 seconds and he stopped again, now? Nope, keep going. After a couple of minuted, it was looking good except he wasnt past his (small) pits. He said, gee, I thought this was going to be quick! He did it a little while longer and then gave up. He went home and ordered some new ones from Roberts. His cylinders really werent bad, he could have saved them if he had had a little more patience. I guess he thought it was going to be like sharpening a pencil.
