The problem with these is usually cost. The diesel engines weigh more and cost more than their gasoline counterparts. With the higher cost of diesel, and their higher maintenance costs it's at best a wash on saving money. Kind of like most Hybrids were/are.

Every time fuel goes up the auto makers start talking diesel, then prices drop and they scrap those plans.

Dodge/Cummins had a clean sheet V6 diesel they developed in the old Durango platform. It was reported to be far better than the 318 V8 in that vehicle, but then gas prices stayed low and they canned the project.

GM has a 4.5L V8 diesel they were developing for the Silverado and other platforms that they killed when the government bought them. Looked like a very advanced design.

My fear is less that the government is giving Nissan money, and more that all that money will be spent and nothing will come from it. If we get a clean, efficient, powerful, small diesel pickup that makes the big three sit up and start to compete than it was money well spent IMO.
