Yep, I bet that's what happened. They probably see dollar signs and will likely do nothing with it until he dies and then will sell it quickly for a good price to get rid of it. You still might have a chance, particularly if the relatives live far away and don't want the hassle of trailering what they probably consider a piece of junk.
I love the photo you posted with the moss on the rig. How long has that one sat?!
