Many say that a boat is a hole in the water that you just pour money into. I'm fortunate to live on the Kenai River with a dock and I put my boat in in May and pull it out in Sept. Short season, but well worth it when you hook up a 60+lb king salmon.

AK boat story from about 20 years ago. I was stationed with the Air Force in Fairbanks, AK and they operated a boat rental in Valdez; great fishing for halibut and salmon.

Three young airmen rented a boat to go halibut fishing. I was there in my boat when they rented a boat. The dock boy told them that if they get a halibut of 100 lbs or more they typically needed to be shot with a pistol. Yes, that is common practice up here because a fish of that size can destroy a boat and hurt anglers.

These young inexperienced anglers happened to get a very large halibut. The three stout young men managed to haul the halibut over the rail. One of them reminded the others they needed to shoot it so one of them did while it was lying in the back of the boat. Needless to say, the Coast Guard had to rescue them. They were towed in while we were cleaning our fish. I'm sure they remembered on their next trip to shoot the halibut when it is still in the water.
