I have been researching diesel running issues lately chasing a problem with a different model diesel. The smoke and high egt would point to turbo problems, most likely bearing failure to the point the turbine blades hit the case. Unfortunately my reading has all indicated that most diesels will still start and run with a siginificant amount of turbo damage. They don't mind burning oil after all and you don't need a turbo to idle. The bad news is I have heard of turbo pieces damaging pistons. It seems odd that the engine would still not run as I have a 4bt with a dead cylinder that will still start and run. If it is cold though that engine is pretty hard to start, but it fires and then dies when it gets to the bad cylinder, if you do that a few times eventually it will catch. I am thinking some sort of an injection pump problem. The injectors are easy to pull, I would crack the lines and look for fuel when cranking. Might then pull the injectors, with a dead cylinder I have a wet injector and 3 sooty dry injectors. Checking the turbo should be as easy as pulling the air filter and any feed piping. I am not hardly a diesel mechanic but since I can't afford new diesels for my projects I am starting to learn a little about what can go wrong with the diesel engine.
