When I started hunting deer in 1963 when I was eight, before the anti hunting movement, it was common to put your deer on a fender and parade around town a short time before you butchered it. Other old timers on this site will attest to that being common even before that. There are scores of such photos from the '40s and 50's.
Times have changed. Yes, I agree that putting the animal next to the heat of the engine was a terrible idea, it's just the way it was.
