That was one of the best vehicles we ever owned - a 98 Cherokee Classic. I did go with 235 Goodyear Wranglers and was very happy with them. I was getting just shy of 80,000 miles on a set of tires. I don't remember the axle ratio, but it had a Command Trac transfer case and a straight 6-cylinder engine. I expect your transmission would be the same as ours if it is an automatic. The 99 Grand Cherokee has a different automatic transmission.
