It depended upon the particular Jeep vehicle as they all came from the factory with different size tires. Nothing outlandish, just a size or two bigger than what was offered on that particular model, i.e.: like moving from 215 to 225 or 235, or from 225 to 245.

My main concerns have been to get a tire with a more aggressive tread pattern, a little more groud clearance, and maybe a larger footprint. Most of our Cherokees have had the Up-Country suspension package and/or towing package, which in some cases resulted in a lower gearset in the axles. The object was not necessarily to gain better milage, but that happened in most cases. On our '99 Grand Cherokee it backfired. I now have to drive it 70 to 80 mph in order to get the best milage - which is great for long trips on the interstate, but not for driving back and forth to work. It had the smallest tires, and none of those special packages from the factory, and I have never felt that the shift points were quite correct in its particular transmission. But, with the larger tires, it does get better traction in the snow and I have yet to get stuck while dragging the axle housings in the ruts in muddy fields where they usually park us at farm auctions.
