I have a couple I have left attached to rigs at my cabin over the winter. I point them low in the sky to the south. On a clear day, I always get at least some direct sun there because the valley opens to the south. They usually get buried in the snow over the winter, but so far every rig that I've had a solar panel on has had a good battery come spring. It helps to put long wires on it so you have more options of where to put the panel. I would go for the ones that are at least a foot square or bigger. I don't think the little skinny ones that are meant to sit on the dashboard are really big enough, at least around here in the winter.
