I had one of the big Dodges with the 331 back in the 70's. The rear axle in mine was a Timken double reduction vacuum shift 2 spd - same shape as the one in the images. Double reduction has a pinion that drives a small ring gear that in turn drives the large gear on the differential. Also worm drive rear axles wear not that uncommon in tandem axle heavy trucks. Timken model was SQW. Biggest problem was there was no inter axle differential so tire sizes had to be kept closely matched as the driven gear was brass. I new a trucker in Ellensburg that had a 55'KW with factory worms. It had a 400 Hall Scott when new. When gas got expensive in the 70's he put a 12V71 Detroit in it and the rear ends lived fine.
