I don't want to start a poltical argument here, but how would import taxes protect jobs like these? Germany, despite good pay for its workers, is competitive in export market. Import taxes only protect domestic sellers from foreign competition, and that MIGHT force domestic sellers to buy from domestic producers. It does nothing to help domestic producers sell to foreigners, which is the key to a positive trade balance. Furthermore, as far as I know, everybody in the EU has the same tariffs with regard to outsiders. Why, then do we buy German machinery and tools rather than Greek or Portuguese ones? I bet the Greeks and Portuguese even have cheaper labor. I don't know the whole answer, but a big part of it has to be simply that the Germans know how to design machines really well and build them really well. Customers will even pay a little bit extra for quality, so long as it isn't too much extra.
