The M37 trans is a NP420 with a different top cover and shifter. It also has a different bolt pattern. It bolt pattern matches the nonsynchro bell housing that your PW has if you have the crash box trans found in earlier PWs. The military stuck with the older bolt pattern so they could swaps trannies without having to worry about the bolt pattern.

The M37 internals are the same as the PW NP420 trans. I took the internals from a 1956 PW trans and switched them to an empty m37 case. I then used the PW top cover and shifter which are a direct bolt on to the PW NP420. This allowed me to retain the original bell housing which saved a lot of work. It was a simple remove the old and slide in the new trans. You also need to find a later center floor trans hump and either trim or find a later version right side floor board.

I made this switch in my truck as it's trans was badly worn and I had a PW NP420 sitting around. DC sold me an empty M37 case and a NP420 PTO.
