The tools and equipment are indeed a loss, but I see a link with an even sadder happening. I know of several master craftsmen who in their later years decided to stop working with any kind of apprentice. They were inclined to be a little eccentric and impatient with the young, so they muddled along in their final years working alone. When the bell tolled for them, a lifetime legacy of wisdom, skills, and short cuts vanished without an heir...and of course the tools experienced the fate you have so aptly described.
So, if you are an old fart like me, lighten up a little and see if you can work a young helper into your daily routine. We'll all be the richer for it.
