UPS is not even close to an upStart company. They have been around for about a century. They started in Seattle. They are successful as they have a very tight business model and can adjust as needed. They really have their processes refined. The UPS drver's work their arses off but can get paid well.

On the other hand the Post Office is quasi government and is not as flexible as congress is involved. Additionally, their business model is not as tight and well defined. They must by definition continue in loosing markets and services. Their people are paid decently with very good benefits and retirement. Postmasters even in small post offices are well paid as I understand. As per most government operations there is bloat and they really are not there to make money or break even. They are there to provide a service. There has been no incentive to run lean and mean like UPS.
