This is a subject that I've always found a bit perplexing. Those of us old enough to remember AMOCO gas of the fifties, and earlier, will recall their claim to fame as being lead free....'the clean gasoline', and this was long before the era of environmental concerns. The cars of the fifties, with their soft valve seats, ran just fine on this fuel, but I also recall valve jobs being done every few years, something rarely hear of these days. Is it possible that AMOCO used an additive other than lead to accomplish the same, or were lower driving speeds a contributing a factor? I've never gotten a good answer from anyone.
