I was told by a mechanic buddy that it is probably okay to use unleaded in older, high mileage engines because there is probably enough oil blowby to lube the valves. Newer engines have harder valve seats so they can get away with the new unleaded fuel. If you rebuild an older engine with old valve seats or if you have an old engine with low miles and good compression you probably should use a lead substitute. I'm no expert but it seems to make sense to me.
