The colibris hit about as hard as a CO2 pellet and don't damage whatever's behind the rat. But for the winter I always have to leave some rat poison in places where nothing but a rat will get it. Even so, unless a weasel shows up I'll have more pack rats by spring. Stu's battery box is one big pack rat nest and the cab is half full, no matter how many rats I kill. I recently picked up a roll of tar paper and the entire inside of the roll had been stuffed full of truffles by the pack rats. They're clever animals, but intolerable in any sort of civilized place. They chop any sort of rope or wiring into short pieces, rendering it useless, drag anything shiny up to and including 12" galvanized spikes into their nests, and leave a vile brown coating on anything they can't chew or drag. Mice have never given me a problem, but pack rats are an ongoing plague. I was hoping these new wolves would eat them, but apparently not.
