Wasn't picking a fight on the pros and cons, just stating what I've personally seen. OP was referring to tanks and I don't remember too many flatheads being used in those. In my personal vehicles I've had 5 mechanical die vs one electric. My beater truck has 350000 moles on the original electric pump. I've personally never topped that with any mechanical.

Most of the modern injector type motors use a fuel rail with a pressure relief line back to the tank now. I'd venture to say starters have been cheapened because they don't have to crank as long to get a motor up and running.

I got to thinking about it the other day. I can remember my sister sticking an old hairbrush in the carb's butterfly when she'd flood it to get it started. Can you imagine that happening today?

The simplicity of the old stuff was nice but I can remember there sure seemed to be a lot more maintenance with it.
