You have asked a question, to which you will receive many answers.

Here is how I chain down all my old iron.
All chains are DOT rated as are the ratchet binders.

Each axle is chained down to the trailer at two points (right and left side). I do not cross the chains. I tighten the ratchet binders enough to see the tire being pulled down. I then chain down the body on each corner with lighter chain and ratchet binders. I pull down the body/frame till the chains have some tension. This eliminates the suspension on the load wallowing around.
I dont want my load to move at all when chained on the trailer. The trailer suspension will handle all suspension needs.

Once chained down, check the chains for tightness after a few miles. Then keep a eye on the chains whenever your stop.

Chaining down in this manner, I have NEVER had a chain work loose.

As mentioned, standby for a lot of different methods. The main thin is that nothing moves. If the trailer flipped on its side, the truck should still be chained in place and not have moved. And yes, I saw a Large Backhoe properly chained on a trailer sitting on its side still inplace on the trailer.

FInally, I do not trust the nylon straps. I prefer DOT rated 3/8" chain and binders
