But what they forget is that "they" are a lot less relevant than "they" think they are. Yes it's nice to have store-bought "news" (though most of what I hear on the "news" these days is celebrity gossip, sports, and s.e.x scandals) just like it's nice to have store-bought nacho chips, chicken mcnuggets, and "power" that comes out of a wire on the street for 9 cents/kwh, but "nice to have" is not the same as "necessary" or even "important".
The greatest fear of that sentient creature known as "government" is that it may one day find itself irrelevant. It's the equivalent of an individual's fear of death. An irrelevant government, a government people can do without just fine, a government that we don't need or want protecting us from anything, is no government at all. Hence the need for governments to create emergencies that they can manage.
