Depending on year of Military engine, the major differences between M and civilian:

- Head
- Distributor
- Oil pump
- Block
- Crank
- Carb

I would leave the sludge in on an older engine if it were me. It captures particles that settle when the engine is not running. Clean rust and lap the valves and seats. As long as you don't have a crater straight across seats, you'll be fine, unless guides are excessively worn.
