I have not seen 2 stage vs 1 stage brought up but usually the 175 psi are two stage. I have had a 2 stage 5 hp compressor for about a year and it seems the two stage results in drier air. By pumping the air to 175 more of the moisture will drop out in the tank (reciever). Also because of the intercooler and the large tank the air cools more before entering my shop lines furhther reducking moisture. I regulate to about 100 psi at the tank and let my shop system run at the lower pressure than the tank and then further regulate to 90 at my quick connects. I used to get a lot of water carry over and even with a drier/regulater would have water spraying out of my tools in the summer. I drain the drier after each time I am in the shop and since the larger compressor have never gotten more than a teaspoon out of it. I get tons of water out of the tank. Plasma cutters hate water so if you are thinking plasma cutter at all the high pressure two stage seems like a must to me.
