There's a fairly generic M-series rifle holder that I think is still available from the surplus dealers. It has a bracket that mounts on the dash and another that mounts on the floor, and it holds two rifles. I have one but haven't installed it yet. You have to drill various holes to install it but it should fit any M-series truck. It seems like a few years back there were lots of them available. I think there's a clamp to keep the rifle from falling out of the dash bracket, and just a pocket on the floor piece for the butt to sit in. The fit is loose and it will hold just about any long gun.

Legally, it all depends on where you are. Here (Idaho) you can carry a rifle or pistol anywhere you want, on your person or in your vehicle, so long as it's visible, without any kind of permit. Once you conceal it, then it gets trickier, and basically has to be out of reach unless you have a permit. I haven't heard of a place where it HAS to be concealed, though some places like National Parks require them to be "disassembled" and "cased", presumably so you don't succumb to a sudden urge to shoot Bambi or Smokey while you're driving the geyser loop.

Personally, I would not leave a gun visible in a vehicle unattended unless it was just for a little while and I was way out in the boonies with nobody around. They're just too tempting. Last summer here a group of teenagers decided to go murder one of the boy's fathers in Montana. They drove up to a popular trailhead, broke into several cars and rummaged through them until they found a couple of guns, and then headed off to commit their murder. Fortunately the boys were pulled over by a state trooper before they got to their destination and no shots were fired. You can't lock an M37, and any sort of gun is just too tempting.
