Common cause is that the engine has been revved a bit higher than normal . The rods stretch a bit more than normal and the ring hits this little lip in the bore and breaks . Crud behind the ring will keep it from moving back into the piston groove and this can aid breakage too . Running hotter than normal can cause the top ring to break as well . Think expansion and length .
