I got the blown engine pretty well torn apart now. I was surprised to see that all pistons had the top ring broken, and one other piston besides the one that threw the rod was broken. I did knock the pistons out through the top of the block, so I suppose I could have broken the rings that way, but there was really no noticeable ridge at the top of any of the cylinders except the one that threw the rod. One also had a broken oil ring. The broken piston had a chunk of the skirt missing, but appeared to have still been going up and down okay. One of the valves on #1 had its top broken off. Not sure why that would happen. This truck's always smoked really heavy and burned a lot of oil, so maybe the rings have been busted for a long time, but now I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence. The crank looks great and none of the rod and main bearings showed any visible wear to speak of.
