I would like somebody to try it (on their truck, not mine). A DC generator will start up with no battery, thanks to residual magnetism in the iron (that's why we polarize them). That's what makes the cutout coil in the regulator cut in when the engine is running. If the regulator was able to hold the voltage somewhere within the range of reason even without a battery on it, it might actually run. Of course you'd need to push start it, and maybe push (or roll) for quite a ways to get it to build up enough voltage. More likely you'd jump start it from another vehicle, disconnect the jumper cables, and see if it kept running. Maybe I'll try that on my beater M37 with the blown engine, once I get the new engine in. It has nothing hooked up to the electrical system except the starter and ignition (no lights or gauges) so there isn't much to blow if the voltage goes nuts.
