As for the clutch, perhaps breakage is why all the newer winches have the clutch mechanism inside the housing, often at the opposite end of the drum from the worm gear. All that sticks out is the control lever, and they put it in a place where it's less likely to get snagged by something. Also, all the pieces of an MU2 type clutch mechanism are cast iron, which is fragile in such thin sections. Lastly, with the clutch out in the open, a guy can get by with just sliding the jaws together or apart by hand, and he can do without the drum brake, which probably quit working early anyway. So, going back to 1975 or so when it was just an old beater off-road truck to some farmer or logger, the clutch mechanism gets broken, he chucks it in the bushes, and slides the jaws by hand or with the help of hammer or bar, gets back to work, and doesn't bother fixing it.
